Treasury in the Heart of Bavaria

The unique fossil finds from Painten

Prehistoric Crocodile

Our current exhibition takes you back to the time when the middle of Bavaria resembled the Caribbean: an amazing variety of fish, turtles and marine dinosaurs lived in the warm waters. At the top of the food chain was an almost five-meter-long crocodile – the largest slab limestone fossil of all time!

Fossil Paradise Painten

Lizards and pterosaurs lived on the small islands in the reef. They all come from the excavation in Painten in the eastern Altmühltal, the largest scientific excavation ever carried out in Bavaria! Well over fourty fossils in perfect detail preservation can be admired as originals.
